“A penny for your thoughts” Chucks said as he turned off the ignition of the RAV 4 2015 model he recently got himself for his 32nd birthday. “Oh, it’s nothing really” I started, just wondering what kind of life awaits ‘Tito this time around, I mean why will she ever decide to move in back with Dapo? You think people really do change? I asked slowly, afraid the answer might actually confirm my fears.

“People don’t change ‘Motola, at least, they never change completely. “Hmmm, I think so too. I replied, sighing loudly while using my right index finger to draw out lines on my left Palm.

“Just be happy for her, okay? I’m sure she thought this through and know exactly what she’s doing. Chucks said reassuringly, trying to cheer me up.

“It’s alright, I hope so. Don’t forget our date tonight o, I said, planting a kiss on his cheeks while making my way out of the car.

“Sure, you know I can’t wait to have you all to myself, Chucks replied with a mischievous smile, and hey, take it easy with ‘Tito when you see her alright?”

I nodded and watched him smile as he slowly drives off.

Chuka ‘Chucks’ Godswill is the perfect definition of a gentleman. A very smart, intelligent, witty, well mannered guy who seems to know the right thing to say and do just at the right time. He’s a successful young man with a well renowned company he established from scratch. He loves God, infact, he’s the church’s guitarist. He stands tall at 6feet 4inches and with that chocolatey skin? He’s probably the most handsome guy I’ve ever seen. Who says a lady can’t have it all? Now people keep telling me I don’t know how lucky I am to have such a man in my life. Of course I know how lucky I am and I know how damn lucky he is too to have me. Not doing badly myself, as a young successful lawyer who co owns a law firm with one of the best solicitors in town.

Okay, now back to the present.

“Yes, who is it? I could hear ‘Tito’s voice coming through from the doorbell.

“It’s me, ‘Motola”.

“Oh sweetie! I’ll soon be there”. The excitement in ‘Tito’s voice was unmistakable. The gate was flung open and standing there was ‘Tito beaming from ear to ear.

“Are you sure you’ve really thought this through? I asked her, ignoring the hugs and the sweet pleasantries she was throwing at me.

“It’s alright darling, relax, I’ll be fine”.

“Okay, all I want is your happiness you know.

“I know love,I know and I’m assuring you that I’m fine, she replied calmly.

You see, ‘Tito and I have been best of friends since our primary school days. Unfortunately she had to stop schooling after our Junior Secondary School Certificate Exams due to the death of her parents who were involved in an auto crash and with no relative ready to take up that responsibility. She later started living with one of her aunts, aunt Pam, who happens to be the only younger sister of her father and the only one in the family ready to accommodate her. Aunt Pam is this well known overly fair skinned, plump lady that recruits very young girls from villages to be sponsored abroad. Rumor has it though that she sells them into prostitution, but who really knows the true story? None of the girls has ever returned to tell their story, we only know they ‘settle’ the parents every month. Aunt Pam was fairly well to do, ‘Tito therefore assume life was going to be at least fair to her this time around not knowing Aunt Pam already had other plans. She gave ‘Tito out as an housemaid to one very wealthy family in Oluyole, here in Ibadan. It was there that ‘Tito fell pregnant for Dapo, the only son to her master’s very close friend. She was just 16 years old at the time while Dapo was a 23 year old young graduate who just started managing one of his dad’s numerous companies.

Although Dapo didn’t deny the pregnancy and asked her to move in with him but since then, it’s been hell for her. He beats her blue black, talks her down in public, brings home different women as he pleases, treats her like a glorified housemaid and obviously has no regard, however little, for her.

‘Tito endured all these for good ten years before deciding to finally walk away the day he almost snuffed life out of her for daring to question his whereabouts for the first time ever! She moved in with me and I was able to get her a job as a salesperson at the new high end boutique just down the street so she can fend for herself and her two children. Dapo came around after a year to apologize and swore that he’s a changed person and now ready to marry her properly. I kicked against this but ‘Tito was surprisingly calm about it and agreed to marry him. He opened a boutique for her, bought her a nice Camry car and well, they got legally married three days ago, which happens to fall on a Tuesday, just a very personal event at the Ibadan south west local government registry.

The only thing I want is my friend’s happiness because she really has gone through a lot and it’s going to take a while for me to trust this Dapo but of course, she knows him better than I do.

Anyway, I entered as ‘Tito opened the gate for me and I can’t recall ever seeing her this happy before. Maybe Dapo is actually doing something right this time around, I thought aloud
“Oh, he’s a changed person, the best husband ever! She exclaimed, giggling like a young girl who just found love.

“Well, we’ll see. I shrugged, still not very convinced.

“Chucks has asked me to marry him” I blurted out as we make our way into the sitting room, barely settling down into the customized blue sofas.

“Wow, that’s great news! I’ve been waiting eagerly for this news you know, ‘Tito said, sounding very excited. “But come oh, why do I seem more excited than you? She asked in a serious tone.

“I… I don’t know really, I stammered.

“Is anything the matter? Are you having a second thought? Talk to me, ‘Motola, I’m your best friend”. She pleaded.
