Now that Fall is almost here and the weather is getting more chilly by the day, I can’t help but wonder how quickly Summer flew by. I mean, it seems just like yesterday when Summer came upon us. Anyway, this post is about what to wear to a cocktail wedding party and not about the weather. I attended a wedding last month and my plan has been to put this post up on the blog before the end of Summer and since we officially still have about a week left of Summer, I can say Yay me, I did it!
Okay, let me start by saying I love weddings, I really do. Witnessing two people in love vowing to spend the rest of their lives together is really special and always an emotional moment and I mean, who doesn’t love LOVE?. As much as I love weddings, I also love looking good. I always think that as a wedding guest, it is your responsibility to try and put an effort into looking good. Now I’m not talking about upstaging the bride or something, I’m talking about wearing well ironed, clean clothes that are appropriate for the occasion.
Speaking of appropriate clothes, If someone invites you to a wedding, it’s very likely that she/he will also let you know what the dress code is. Usually, this will be written on the invitation card or the wedding website as the case may be, so always remember to check that out first. If it is not on the invitation card or their website, don’t hesitate to check with the bride or groom if you can reach them but if you can’t reach them or any of the bridal parties or the groom’s men, then you can go along and wear a cocktail attire. A Cocktail attire bridges the gap between an informal and a too formal dressing. It is also the dress code of choice for most weddings, therefore, you can never go wrong with it.
The really good thing about choosing a cocktail attire is that you get to have lots of options for what to wear. Keep in mind though, that as forgiving as Cocktail attires are, there are still rules to be followed.
Let’s check out some of those rules.
- Always wear heels….If for some reasons you can’t, flats are okay but remember that sneakers are a no-no.
- Never wear Denim….Yes, no matter how expensive it is or how well you think you can dress it up. Seriously, ditch the denim. Dressy Pants are allowed though.
- Don’t wear floor length gowns….don’t wear dresses that are too revealing either.
- Always stick with just one statement jewellery….You can let either the neckpiece or the earrings make the statement but never the two at once.
- Never carry a tote….A purse or clutch is all you need to compliment your outfit.
There you have it, what to wear to a cocktail wedding. I’ve added some pictures of what I wore to the wedding last month, including some with my little man, just because he’s too cute. 🙂
My outfit details
Metallic Gold Evening Dress – Lauren Ralph Lauren
Metallic Strap Pump – Calvin Klein Here

Finally, don’t forget that it’s better to be overdressed than be underdressed. Also, don’t forget to have fun.
Do you have any other rules you think should be on this list? Feel free to let me know in the comment section. Comments are always appreciated and don’t forget to check out other posts on the blog.
